The Police: Legacy Tracks
The band’s fifth album, “Synchronicity,” was known for “Wrapped Around Your Finger” and “King Of Pain,” both major hits, but the path was blazed by the album’s lead single, the minimalist “Every Breath You Take.” Combined with the stark black and white video that dominated MTV, the song was mega. You couldn’t escape it. Still, it’s not #1 on the following list.
#5. Roxanne
Released as a single on April 7th, 1978, in advance of their debut album “Outlandos d’Amour,” the song was written by Sting from the point of view of a man who falls in love with a prostitute.
#4. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
From their fourth studio album, “Ghost In The Machine” (1981), the song reached the top of the charts in the United Kingdom and #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
#3. Don’t Stand So Close To Me
The lead single from “Zenyatta Mondatta,” concerns a teacher who has a sexual relationship with a student, which in turn is discovered. Before launching his music career, Sting was a teacher.
#2. Every Breath You Take
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks (the band’s only #1 hit on that chart).
#1. Synchronicity II
“(Carl) Jung believed there was a large pattern to life, that it wasn’t just chaos,” stated Sting. “Synchronicity II” is about two parallel events that aren’t connected logically or causally, but symbolically.”
Sting composed all of the above songs.
