Turnstile

Turnstile received two statues at the 68th (2026) Grammy Awards in L.A. One was for Best Rock Song (“Birds”) and the other was for Best Rock Album (“Never Enough”). They were also the first band to be nominated in the Rock, Alternative, and Metal categories in the same year.

“Never Enough,” the band’s fourth full-length album, peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200. It was their first album without founding member Brady Ebert following his ’22 departure; and first to feature guitarist Meg Mills.

The set was produced by Turnstile’s vocalist Brendan Yates who told the L.A. Times, “What drew, and still draws me to (Hardcore), is that none of us were musicians. Punk and Hardcore are less focused on skill and more on expressing yourself. I think making music is just a shot in the dark. It’s this open canvas.”

Formed in Baltimore, Turnstile’s indie debut full-length album “Nonstop Feeling” was preceded by two EPs. Those efforts failed to generate mass public interest… but they got the band signed with Roadrunner Records.

“Time & Space” was the band’s first full-length set with a major label topped the Billboard Heatseekers chart. It was also the first studio album to feature rhythm guitarist Pat McCrory.

However, third album, “Glow On,” the last album to feature Ebert, established the band. The ’21 release included the lead single “Mystery,” followed by, “Alien Love Call,” featuring Blood Orange, “Blackout” and “Fly Again.” The band first reached the Alternative Airplay Top 10 with “Mystery,” which peaked at #8. Later that year, “Holiday” reached #10.

The album debuted at #30 on the Billboard 200 becoming the band’s first appearance on that chart. And at the 65th Grammy Awards two songs received nominations: “Holiday” (Best Rock Performance) and “Blackout” (Best Rock Song and Best Metal Performance).

It would be a nearly four-year wait for Turnstile’s next album. But “Never Enough” not only found success on the Billboard 200 and at the Grammys it also debuted at #1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, #2 on the Top Rock & Alternative chart and #4 on the Top Album Sales survey.

Creed got slammed by critics but rather than ignore them, the reviews took root. Creed’s third full-length release “Weathered” hit the streets in ’01. Beware of novelty songs. It may be fun to do one. But bands rarely think it could be what they are remembered for. Despite other great performances, the Bangles and “Walk Like An Egyptian” are eternally linked. The Bangles had two #1 songs, the aforementioned novelty track and the dreamy ballad “Eternal Flame.” Based on…

Kurt Cobain’s first musical contribution was hauling gear for the Melvins, whose early work was key in Grunge’s development. That gig led Cobain to Krist Novoselic. News of the Arctic Monkeys’ U.K. success initially had to be viewed skeptically. They were yet another band who wore their Jam, Clash and Smiths influences on their sleeve. Toss in the White Stripes, Vines, Libertines and a scruffier take on Franz Ferdinand for mainstream accessibility. Yet even for the U.K., it looked as though…
