Metallica Reaches Historic Mark

Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album (aka “The Black Album”) is the fourth record to spend 800 weeks (over 15 years) on the Billboard 200. The album originally peaked at #1 on August 31st, 1991, and it currently sits at #162 on the chart.

The other three albums that have reached the 800-week mark are Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side Of The Moon,” (1973), Bob Marley And The Wailers “Legend” (1984) and Journey’s “Greatest Hits” (1988).

Metallica and Pink Floyd are the only ones with studio albums that have reached 800 weeks. The Bob Marley and Journey entries were compilations.

Albums with over 700 weeks on the Billboard 200 include “Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Chronicle,” a hits compilation (756 weeks), Nirvana’s “Nevermind” (732 weeks) and Guns N’ Roses “Greatest Hits” (734 weeks).

Albums can fall off the chart and then re-enter it due to extraneous factors at any given time.
