A Day In Rock: October 28th, 2014: Allman Brothers Final Show

On this day ten years ago… The Allman Brothers Band played their final show, appropriately, at the Beacon Theatre in New York City where the band had an annual residency – they performed at the venue 238 times since ’89.

The show came a day before the 43rd anniversary of guitarist Duane Allman’s death (in ’71) with Derek Trucks (a band member since ’99) playing Duane’s various guitars on the occasion.

In early 2014, the Allman Brothers Band announced that they would disband before the end of the year. But before that happened, they performed a final run of six concerts at the Beacon Theatre.

For the last show, they played an extended performance of three sets, with most of the songs selected from their first five albums. “Final Concert 10-28-14,” a three-CD package is expected to arrive next month.

The Allman Brothers Band were, at one point, the most frequent performer at the Beacon, appearing there nearly every year from 1989 to 2014. After their first performance in 1989, the band returned in 1992, 1994, and annually after 1996 – except for 2010 when the theater was hosting an extended run of Cirque du Soleil.
