New York Dolls Co-Founder Dies
David Johansen, co-founder of the New York Dolls, died Friday (2/28) at his home on Staten Island. He was 75.
Last month Johansen revealed that he had been living with stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor. He had kept keep his illness private for years.
The legendary New York Dolls are widely acknowledged as a groundbreaking Punk band. Durning their initial run in the early 1970’s, the band released their self-title debut (1973) and “Too Much Too Soon” (1974). Neither album was a commercial success and the band fell apart… but would regroup decades later.
A genre-shifting musical nomad Johansen later donned a tuxedo and took the name Buster Poindexter for a lounge-style act that delivered a hit remake of “Hot Hot Hot,”
