Black Sabbath To Be Freemen
Black Sabbath are set to receive Birmingham, England’s Freedom Of The City, an award to people in recognition of their service to the city (Sabbath’s hometown) and is one of the oldest traditional ceremonies in the country.
A report is to go to city council next week recommending that each founding Black Sabbath member become a Freeman Of The City Of Birmingham: Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Terence “Geezer” Butler and Bill Ward.
The city has bestowed other honors on Sabbath. They have a star on the city’s Broad Street Walk Of Stars alongside individual stars for each member and a commemorative bench (also on Broad Street).
“Birmingham has a fantastic musical culture and Black Sabbath are a major part of that history, a pioneering band that still influences today’s musicians,” Cllr Sharon Thompson, deputy leader of the city council, said. “They have become synonymous with the city and have been true ambassadors throughout their phenomenal careers.”
Black Sabbath, considered a Heavy Metal pioneer, was formed in 1968 in Aston, Birmingham and has sold over 75 million albums worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2006.
