July 24th, 2001: “Bleed American” Released

On this day twenty-three years ago… Jimmy Eat World delivered “Bleed American.”  The platinum set was re-released as “Jimmy Eat World following the 9/11 attacks; that name remained until ’08.

As a result of the commercial failure and lack of recognition for ’99’s “Clarify” Jimmy Eat World was dropped by Capitol Records. Aside from working odd jobs, the band toured to raise money for their next album.

The struggle paid off. Picked up by Dreamworks Records, “Bleed American,” was a commercial success, helping Jimmy Eat World gain mainstream popularity. In its first four months of release, the set sold 173,000 copies in the U.S., becoming Jimmy Eat World’s most successful effort.

The singles included the title track and “The Middle.”
