July 16th, 2003: KFC Protest Gets The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde Arrested

On this day twenty-one years ago… The Pretenders Chrissie Hynde was detained by police following a PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) protest outside a Paris KFC.

Hynde, one of a dozen protesters in all, shut down traffic by blocking the street. They also smeared the KFC windows with red paint which symbolized the blood of dead chickens.

Hynde was in Paris for a festival performance days later. She told reporters that she was willing to pay any fine but will continue her protest.

But despite the efforts of Hynde and others, the chickens inside, original recipe and extra crispy, remained dead.
