Green Day took the stage during ABC’s broadcast of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest” and called out Donald Trump’s supporters by changing the lyrics to their ‘04 hit “American Idiot.” Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sings “I’m not part of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) agenda” rather than the original line, “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda.”
“American Idiot,” critical of the policies of (former president) George W. Bush’s administration, is among the band’s most political songs. While the live audience cheered many Trump supporters took to Twitter to accuse the band of being part of the “propaganda machine.”
This is not the first time, nor likely the last, the band takes a swipe at Donald Trump and his supporters.
