Released in December ’83 “Jump” was the lead single from Van Halen’s sixth studio album, “1984.”  Eddie Van Halen not only played the synth parts he also delivered a killer guitar solo.

“Engineer Donn Landee and Ed put the track down alone in the middle of the night,” producer Ted Templeman remembered. “We recut it once in one take for sonic reasons. Dave wrote the lyrics that afternoon in the backseat of his Mercury convertible. We finished all vocals that afternoon and mixed it that evening.”

Roth, listening to a tape of the track, began musing about someone deciding whether to jump off a building. But band roadie Larry Hostler suggested the lyrics could be written as an invitation to action, life and love.  Roth later told Musician magazine that Hostler was “probably the most responsible for how it came out.”
