Today In Rock: March 1st, 1994 – Nirvana’s Last Show

On this day… Nirvana’s last show was in Munich, Germany.

By the time Nirvana’s European tour reached Munich for a show at Terminal 1, Cobain was suffering from bronchitis due to the rigors of the tour.

The night launched with an impromptu cover of The Cars” “My Best Friend’s Girl” but during the sixth song, “Come As You Are,” the power went out.

After a brief delay, the band retuned to conclude their 23-song set after 80 minutes, the shortest of the tour. The last song was “Heart-Shaped Box.”

Cobain’s health and his ongoing struggle with drug addiction issues forced Nirvana to cancel the remainder of their European date.

Cobain flew to Rome to recuperate. But three days later, he was rushed to the hospital after overdosing on champagne and Rohypnol, a drug used to relieve his long-term chronic stomach pain. At the time it was termed an accidental overdose but later acknowledged as a suicide attempt.

A month later, Cobain’s body and a suicide note were found in his Seattle home.
