A Day In Rock: September 2nd, 1993 – Pearl Jam Wins

On this day thirty-one years ago… Pearl Jam won big with “Jeremy” at the MTV Video Music Awards. Best Video of the Year, Best Group Video and Best Hard Rock Video were among the trophies.

Vocalist Eddie Vedder (pictured above) was inspired to write the song’s lyrics from a newspaper article he read about Jeremy Wade Delle, a high school student who shot himself in front of his English class in ’91.

Delle was described by schoolmates as ‘real quiet’ and known for ‘acting sad’. Vedder has said he felt “the need to take that small article and make something of it—to give that action, to give it reaction, to give it more importance.”

The song is on Pearl Jam’s debut set “Ten.”

Other award winners were Lenny Kravitz (Best Male Video – “Are You Gonna Go My Way”), Stone Temple Pilots (Best New Artist in a Video -“Plush”) and Nirvana (Best Alternative Video – “In Bloom”).
