Today In Rock: June 22nd, 1985: “Beverly Hills Cop” Soundtrack Is #1

Featuring Glenn Frey’s “The Heat Is On,” the “Beverly Hills Cop” soundtrack topped the Billboard 200 for two weeks.

Frey was the only Rock-oriented performer on the soundtrack which included Patti LaBelle (“New Attitude:), Pointer Sisters (“Neutron Dance”) and Harold Faltermeyer (“Axel F”). It won a Grammy Award in ’86 for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

Released in ’84, the buddy cop-comedy-action-film starred Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a street-smart Detroit detective, who visits Beverly Hills to solve the murder of his best friend. The film shot Murphy to international stardom.
