A Day In Rock: November 11th – Veterans Day

On this day ten years ago… Metallica, Black Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl (pictured), Rihanna, Eminem, Zac Brown Band, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood were among the performers at the Concert for Valor on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The Veterans Day event, organized by Starbucks and HBO, raised funds for veterans’ charities.
Approximately 100,000 people attended. A couple of the performances drew questions as to their propriety for the event: one was a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” with its anti-establishment lyrics, performed by the Zac Brown band with Grohl and Springsteen and another was Eminem’s profanity-laced tribute to Veterans Day.
One year later, on a less controversial note, Rock & Brews, a restaurant chain co-founded by KISS’ Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, offered veterans, active military personnel and first responders a complimentary pulled pork sandwich with a side or salad on Veterans Day. The free meal offer has become an annual event.
