A Day In Rock: December 26th, 2012: Ann & Nancy’s Tribute To Led Zeppelin Televised

On this day… Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson’s performance of “Stairway To Heaven” at the Kennedy Center Honors’ tribute to Led Zeppelin – recorded earlier in the month – is broadcast on CBS.

The Wilson sisters were joined by Jason Bonham, son of Zeppelin’s late original drummer John.  Their version of Zepplin’s signature song gradually grew to include a string section, backup singers and the Joyce Garrett Youth Choir.

“My main goal was to please Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones… especially Plant, since all these many years he has taught me so much about singing from the soul,” Ann posted.

The surviving Zeppelin band members sat watching from the balcony and were visibly moved, particularly Robwert Plant, who had tears welling up in his eyes.

“It was really one of those life moments that you’re never gonna forget,” added Nancy. “Just like, ‘Okay, I was part of that, and that was really cool’.”
