Santana’s “Supernatural” begins the first of two extended runs at the top of the Billboard 200.  This one lasts three weeks.  2000

The Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” receives five Oscar nominations, including a coveted Best Picture Nomination. Rami Malek, who portrayed Freddie Mercury in the film, also garners a Best Actor nomination.   The other three nominations are for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Film Editing.   2019

David Bowie tells Melody Maker that he’s bisexual. Bowie also predicts he’ll be huge. 1972

Rod Stewart, Sting and Bryan Adams take “All For Love” to #1 in the U.S. The ballad is on “The Three Musketeers” soundtrack. The song was co-written by Adams for the movie’s end credits. 1994

After a one week run at the top of the Billboard 200 late in the previous year, Green Day’s “American Idiot” returns for a two-week stand.  2005

Linkin Park’s Music for Relief charity funds the planting of 100,000 trees to help the environment. The donation goes to the ecologically minded American Forests organization on behalf of the band’s LP Underground fan club. 2008

A Volkswagen Jetta commercial uses Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold.” The ad shows a young man’s vehicle purchases before becoming a mature father buying a Volkswagen. 2012

Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page appears in a spread for menswear designer John Varvatos. The photos were shot at London’s Rivoli Ballroom. 2013

A ’65 Mosrite Ventures V1 guitar once owned by the late Johnny Ramone (The Ramones) is auctioned for $71,000 by Boston-based RR Auction. 2015

Pearl Jam launch an effort that raises $300,000 for the victims of the Flint, MI water crisis where for two years dangerous amounts of lead contaminated the drinking water. The group also starts a crowdfunding campaign to help Flint residents purchase water filters, bottled water, emergency support services and prevention efforts. 2016

Alice Cooper guitarist Nita Strauss co-hosts the Women’s International Music Network’s (the WiMN) She Rocks Awards in Anaheim, CA. The event honors women who stand out as role models in the music industry. 2016

Ex-Pantera singer Philip Anselmo’s “white power” salute, while performing Pantera’s “Walk” during a benefit in Hollywood honoring late Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott has some calling Anselmo a racist. Anselmo later states that he “deserves completely” the “heat” that he has taken and apologizes for his actions. 2016

The daughter of the late Slipknot bassist Paul Gray wins a settlement in a lawsuit against a doctor and other health care providers for the loss of her father’s companionship and support. Gray struggled for years with drug addiction and died of a fentanyl overdose in ’10 at age 38.  The suit was filed by Gray’s widow, Brenna Gray, on behalf of her daughter.  The terms of the settlement are not disclosed.  2018

Kid Rock says he is donating more than $100,000 from sales of merchandise during his “joke” Senate campaign to CRNC Action, a GOP voter registration effort.  2018

Vixen announce they have recruited Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale) as their lead singer following the departure of Janet Gardner. Lewis had a stint with Vixen in ‘18 while Gardner recovered from surgery.  2019

Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose sings “November Rain” during the public memorial service at Graceland for Lisa Marie Presley.  Elvis Presley’s only child died on 1/12 at the age of 54. 2023
