Today In Rock: April 28th, 2008: STP Vocalist Gets Sentenced

On this day… Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver) was sentenced to 192 hours in jail after pleading no contest to a DUI charge stemming from his arrest on an L.A. freeway on-ramp the previous November. Weiland, who had originally entered a not-guilty plea was also put on a four-year summary probation, ordered to enter an 18-month alcohol-treatment program and pay $2,000 in fines

Scott, who was not present in court entered the no contest plea through his attorney,

Weiland was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol with a prior conviction, and with an allegation that he refused a chemical test as required by law.

He failed the field sobriety tests and refused to take a blood or urine test. He was booked for DUI and released on $40,000 bail.

When Stone Temple Pilots dissolved in 2002, Weiland was recruited to front Velvet Revolver with former members of Guns N’ Roses (Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum).

But just prior to the ’08 court ruling Velvet Revolver announced the Weiland was no longer in the band. Weiland then joined the reformed Stone Temple Pilots but he was dismissed in ’13 – briefly replaced by Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington.

Weiland died in ’15 while on tour with his band The Wildabouts. The cause of death was listed as an accidental overdose of alcohol, cocaine and methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA). The singer also suffered from cardiovascular disease, asthma and prolonged substance abuse. He was 48.
