Metallica’s ‘Favorite’ – Sandman – Finishes Seventh In The Kentucky Derby
Sovereignty won Saturday’s 151st running of the Kentucky Derby. However, the horse with a Metallica connection, Sandman, finished well out of the money.
Jonathan Green, one of Sandman’s owners, is a major fan of Hall-of-Fame Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who used Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” when he entered games. Green named the horse ‘Sandman’ in hopes the thoroughbred could close races the way Rivera closed games.

Additionally, Metallica’s lead singer, James Hetfield, who attended this year’s Derby, decided to visit Sandman on Friday.
Metallica donated shirts for the colt’s barn crew. A post on the official Facebook page of the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago showed the workers at Casse’s barn all wearing Metallica T-shirts, with Sandman. See below.
