The “Black Album” Logs Fourth Longest Run On The Billboard 200

Metallica’s self-titled set, commonly referred to as the “Black Album” (due to the cover art), has now spent 750 total non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. Having debuted at #1 on the Billboard survey in ’91, it currently sits at #178.

The band’s fifth studio effort marked a change in direction from the Thrash Metal of their previous four efforts to a slower, heavier, and more refined sound.

All the singles from “Metallica,” “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam” and “Sad But True” charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

Though 750 weeks on the Billboard 200 is very impressive the “Black Album” needs nearly five more years on the chart to equal Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon” (990 total weeks). Bob Marley’s “Legend” (843 total weeks) and Journey’s “Greatest Hits” (813 total weeks) are also ahead of “Metallica.”
