Today In Rock: December 30th, 2022 – The Eddie Vedder/Mötley Crüe Feud
It was a classic Grunge vs. Hair Metal battle.
First, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder (above) stated in a New York Times interview, published on this day, that he “despised” most ’80’s Hair Metal bands, specifically Mötley Crüe.
Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx (pictured) responded by calling Pearl Jam “one of the most boring bands in history” and knocks Vedder’s singing.
Then during a solo concert, Vedder referenced Crüe drummer Tommy Lee’s extravagant carnival ride kit ahead of Chad Smith’s solo. “That drum kit,” says Vedder. “That silver, beautiful machine that he (Smith) is the engine of — does not need to elevate or rotate to do its job. Let me just point that out.”

Both Motley Crue and Pearl Jam each earned five platinum albums in the U.S. But Pearl Jam was the only one with a diamond-certified album (ten-million units moved) for their ’91 debut album, “Ten.”
