1969 Elvis Presley begins a major ten-day recording session in Memphis.

It’s the first time he’s recorded in his hometown in over a decade. The sessions produce “Suspicious Minds,” among other tracks, for the highly acclaimed album, “From Elvis In Memphis.”

1978 The Police began recording their debut album, “Outlandos d’Amour.”

2009 “Greatest Hits,” a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band compilation, is released.

But it’s available exclusively at Wal-Mart. After receiving criticism, Springsteen admits the deal was a mistake.

1954 Trevor Rabin, the one-time Yes guitarist, is born.

1959 James Lomenzo, latter-day Megadeth bassist, is born in Brooklyn.

1973 Eric Clapton makes his stage comeback at London’s Rainbow Theatre. Pete Townshend (The Who) organizes the two concerts to help Clapton kick his heroin habit. The concerts are subsequently released as the “Rainbow Concert” album. 

1980 An Oakland Coliseum concert to benefit the people of Kampuchea has the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, and Jefferson Starship.

1990 Rod Stewart’s “Downtown Train” is #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. 

2005 Incubus announce they will donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund via their nonprofit Make Yourself Foundation. “The magnitude of the tsunami disaster is truly overwhelming and we can only hope that this donation can help bring some relief to the people who’ve been affected by it,” says the band in a statement.

2008 Eddie Vedder’s “Guaranteed,” from the “Into The Wild” soundtrack, wins the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

2010 Known as Jay Reatard, Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., died in his sleep in Memphis at age 29. While an autopsy finds that “cocaine toxicity” was the primary cause, alcohol was also a “contributing factor in his death.”

2014 Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” tops a “best car song” poll conducted by Insurance.com. Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” round out the Top 3. Isurance.com offered a list to choose from but write-ins were allowed. AC/DC’s “Highway To Hell,” Golden Earring’s “Radar Love” and “I Can’t Drive 55” by Sammy Hagar top the submissions.

2014 Switchfoot singer Jon Foreman is treated for a face wound sustained while surfing. “I had a little conversation with my board and it turned into an argument. The board won,” jokes Foreman. Though he makes a full recovery the injury forces the cancellation of a hometown appearance.

2014 Oasis’ back catalog is available on Spotify, Deezer, and Rdio. Oasis was one of the more famous holdouts from free music streaming.

2016 Nickelback sues Lloyd’s Of London for non-payment of $13-million dollars after the group’s tour was canceled due to singer Chad Kroeger’s medical issues. A month earlier, Lloyd’s sued Kroeger for allegedly failing to disclose that he had a pre-existing throat condition.

2019 The National Football League (NFL) officially announces that Maroon 5, a three-time Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum band, will headline the Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show on 02/03 in Atlanta. A handful of pop performers pass on the show in solidarity with former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who while with the San Francisco 49ers, started kneeling during the national anthem in ‘16 to protest racial inequality in the U.S. The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most-watched musical event of the year.

2020 A bicycle accident (no cars or other people) near his home puts Marilyn Manson bassist Juan Alderete in a coma.  Though wearing a helmet the musician sustains serious head trauma in the form of a traumatic brain injury. 

2024 Saving Abel’s founding members, singer Jared Weeks and rhythm guitarist Jason Null, issue contradictory statements. Via the band’s Facebook Null states that their time with Weeks has come to an end. Weeks takes to X to say he has no plans to leave the band. 

2025 Metallica’s All Within My Hands (AWMH) foundation announces grants totaling $500,000 for Los Angeles area wildfire relief efforts carried out by the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund and the Pasadena Community Foundation’s Eaton Canyon Fire Relief And Recovery Fund. The fires burn over 40,000 acres and displace more than 100,000 residents.
