Quite Riot’s third studio album, “Metal Health,” becomes the first Heavy Metal album to top the Billboard 200.  It replaces the Police’s “Synchronicity” at #1.  1983

“Does This Look Infected” from Sum 41 is released. 2002

Though not as popular as their previous album (“All Killer No Filler”), “Does This Look Infected” sells over 4.5 million copies worldwide.

System Of A Down drop their third effort, the Rick Rubin-produced “Steal This Album.” 2002

Tina Turner, the better half of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, is born (with the name Annie Mae Bullock). Tina eventually leaves her abusive husband, Ike, for a successful solo career. 1939

Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie is born in London. He’s a member of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers before lending his name (the ‘Mac’) to one of the ‘70s most successful groups. 1945

The Sex Pistols unleash “Anarchy In The U.K.”  The song peaks at #38 on the U.K. singles chart. 1976

“Crumblin’ Down” sits at #9 in the U.S. as John Cougar announces he’s John Cougar Mellencamp. He always hated his stage name (given to him by a one-time manager). Soon the made-up Cougar moniker is dropped completely. 1983

“Orange Crush,” from R.E.M., tops the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.  1988

MTV Unplugged premieres. The Squeeze are the first to “unplug.” Over the years countless bands go acoustic for this program, including Nirvana. The first season features Aerosmith and Poison.  1989

The Eagles second live album (with four studio tracks), “Hell Freezes Over,” tops the Billboard 200. It’s The Eagles first release following a fourteen-year hiatus.  1994

After a promising to give everyone in North America a free Dr Pepper if Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” is released in ’08, the company has trouble fulfilling their commitment when the album lands. Many fans experience difficulties trying to retrieve the free-soda coupon. GN’R’s lawyer weighs in issuing a letter making all sorts of demands – ranging from Dr. Pepper extending the offer period to making a public apology in several national publications. Guns N’ Roses is not involved in the promotion. 2008

The Black Keys and their producer, Danger Mouse, settle a lawsuit filed in L.A. earlier in the year against Pizza Hut for copyright infringement over the misuse of two “El Camino” tracks – “Gold On The Ceiling” and “Lonely Boy” in a commercial. The settlement details are kept private. 2012

Creed’s Scott Stapp releases a Facebook video telling fans that he is currently homeless. He says an audit revealed money had been stolen from him and royalties had not been paid. Stapp’s wife, Jacklyn, who recently filed for divorce, disagrees claiming Stapp is using drugs and that he threatened to kill himself and hurt his family. 2014

Guitarist Chris Broderick leaves Megadeth after a seven-year run. His announcement comes a day after drummer Shawn Drover announced his departure. 2014

Bon Jovi net their sixth #1 album on the Billboard 200 with “This House Is Not for Sale.” the band’s first studio album without guitarist Richie Sambora sells 129,000 copies in its first week to take the top spot. 2016

Joe Corre, the son of the late Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, sets fire to Punk memorabilia said to be worth $6 million. The protest is aimed at Punk London who are marking “40 years of subversive culture” with a series of shows, events and exhibitions.  Corre previously said the events were even supported by the Queen which proved “the establishment” had “privatized, packaged and castrated” Punk. 2016

The Kensington Police Service in Canada threatens holiday drunk drivers with having to listen to Nickelback in the squad car on the way to the police station.  A Nickelback rep demands the post be taken down and a few days later Const. Robb Hartlen, the man behind the campaign, apologizes for using Nickelback in the anti-drunk driving campaign. 2016

President Donald Trump visits the small-yet-historic city of Tupelo, MS, and promptly compares himself to its favorite son, Elvis Presley. Trump tells the crowd at an airport rally that he doesn’t want to sound “very conceited,” but people used to tell him he rather resembled Elvis back when he was younger. “Other than the blond hair, when I was growing up they said I looked like Elvis.” Trump is there in support of Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate (she’s elected the next day).  2018

Killing Joke guitarist Kevin “Geordie” Walker passes away after suffering a stroke. An early-80’s Post-Punk band, Killing Joke influenced later generations including Metallica, Nirvana and Soundgarden.  2023
