Bon Jovi’s “Slippery When Wet” nails the #1 spot on the album chart. The set sells over 10-million copies. 1986

The album is known for the songs “You Give Love A Bad Name,” “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “Wanted Dead Or Alive.”

The Traveling Wilburys (Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne) deliver their multi-platinum debut album “Vol. 1.”  1988

Hoobastank‘s ’03 single “The Reason” is certified gold (surpassing 500,000 copies sold – it eventually reaches 4-times platinum). It’s the title track and second single from the band’s third album.  2004

The Rolling Stones appear on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. It’s a riotous debut. Following the appearance, Sullivan vows to never have the group on the show again. “It took me 17 years to build this show,” he says. “I’m not going to have it destroyed in a matter of weeks.” Of course, Sullivan relents. 1964

Formerly known as the New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin perform for the first time under their new moniker at Surrey University in England.  1968

Paul McCartney & Wings release the single “Junior’s Farm.” 1974

Jefferson Airplane’s Paul Kantner suffers a brain hemorrhage during a recording session. Following a two-week hospital stay he’s back in action. 1980

Legendary concert promoter Bill Graham (Wulf Wolodia Grajonca) dies in a helicopter crash returning home from a Huey Lewis & The News concert at the Concord Pavilion.  Bad weather results in the helicopter hitting a high-voltage tower. Among his accomplishments, Graham founded the Fillmore West (SF) and the Fillmore East (NY) concert venues.  1991

Nirvana is recognized by the record industry for selling 9-million copies of “Nevermind” and 5-million copies of “In Utero.” 1996

Linkin Park wins the Alternative Rock Song of the Year (for “Numb”) and Rock Artist of the Year trophies at the Radio Music Awards in Las Vegas. 2004

He’s a bloody Neanderthal! London’s Daily Mail reports that scientists using state-of-the-art testing to analyze Ozzy Osbourne’s DNA determine that the singer is a descendant of a Neanderthal man. The results from a New Jersey lab also show that Ozzy is over six times more likely than the average person to become addicted to alcohol and 1.31 times more prone to becoming a cocaine addict. The DNA test was undertaken in an attempt to understand how Ozzy survived decades of alcohol and drug abuse as well as life-threatening accidents. 2010

Coldplay is named the act most likely to induce fans to sleep. That’s according to a U.K. survey undertaken by Travelodge. “Results from various sleep studies… has indicated that listening to soft, relaxing music (including Snow Patrol, Radiohead and even Mozart) at bedtime leads to a number of different benefits to a night’s sleep,” says Stevie Williams, of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. Research reports state that 84% of the U.K. population listens to music in bed. 2010

No more doves or bats for that matter. Ozzy Osbourne announces he’s a vegetarian. – meaning no foods derived from animals. “I’m not saying I’m gonna do it forever,” states the former Black Sabbath singer. “I might go back, when my wife learns to cook. So that’ll be never!” 2011

Jack Bruce, Cream’s bassist, songwriter and vocalist, passes away at age 71 from liver disease. While in Cream, Bruce co-wrote “Sunshine Of Your Love” with Peter Brown. 2014

Charlie Benante, recovering from carpal tunnel surgery and undergoing physical therapy, sits out Anthrax’s European tour dates with Slayer. The drummer is temporarily replaced by Jon Dette. 2015

Imagine Dragons are #1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs airplay chart with “Thunder,” the second single from their “Evolve” album. It’s their 3rd chart topper – “Believer” and “Radioactive” are the other two.  2017

“Creepshow: From Script To Scream,” an official behind-the-scenes book featuring the stories behind the TV series “Creepshow,” arrives.  The foreword is by author Stephen King with an afterword by horror aficionado and Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett.  2022

Dream Theater announce the return of drummer and founding member Mike Portnoy reuniting him with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung. They formed the band in ’85 at the Berklee College Of Music.  2023
