“Crime Of The Century,” Supertramp’s third studio album featuring “Dreamer,” “Bloody Well Right” and “School,” is released.  1974

 Three years later, the album is certified Gold (500,000 units moved) in the U.S.

Don Henley’s “The Boys Of Summer” wins the Best Video, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Direction categories at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York. 1985

Crossfade’s self-titled debut album is awarded platinum certification by the RIAA for 1-million units shipped. 2005

The set is best known for single “Cold.”

Slipknot’s “All Hope Is Gone” moves 239,000 units in its first week of release to become the group’s first #1 debut on the Billboard 200. Kid Rock’s “Rock N Roll Jesus” sits at #3 (behind Rapper Game’s “LAX.”). 2008

Guitarist-vocalist, Dave (Megadave) Mustaine, is born in La Mesa, CA. The Thrash and Speed Metal pioneer joins Metallica in ’81 but gets bounced a couple years later. Soon he launches Megadeth where he makes a lasting impression. 1961

Vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens (Judas Priest) enters the world.  1967

Jane’s Addiction/Porno for Pyros’ drummer Stephen Perkins has a birthday.  1967   

John Lennon, Yoko Ono, guitarist Eric Clapton, bassist Klaus Voorman and drummer Alan White perform live for the first time as the Plastic Ono Band at the Toronto Rock N’ Revival Show. The group rehearses on the flight from England. 1969

Aerosmith’s breakthrough album “Toys In The Attic” peaks at #11 on the Billboard 200. The set contains the classic tracks “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion.” 1975

Though not as well received by critics as other Jackson Browne efforts “Hold Out” is his only #1 album. 1980

Actor Johnny Depp trashes his New York hotel room. The cops are called. In an adjacent room, The Who’s Roger Daltrey endures the raucous. “On a scale of 1 to 10, I give him a 2, because it took so bloody long,” says the singer. “The Who could have done the job in one minute.” 1994

“Be Here Now,” from Oasis, peaks at #2 on the U.S. album chart. 1997

Santana is a big winner at the first Latin Grammy Awards (held in L.A.): Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance. 2000

Reacting to a nasty election year, Democrat John Mellencamp and Republican Country singer Travis Tritt play their guitars on a Nashville streetcorner to promote a bipartisan message for political civility. 2004

Staind are #1 on Billboard’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart with “Believe,” the first single off their “The Illusion Of Progress” album. It’s the band’s third #1. Meanwhile, Theory Of A Deadman’s “Bad Girlfriend” is at the top of the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks survey. 2008

“Come Dancing,” a stage musical composed by Kinks leader Ray Davies, premieres in London. The show features original tunes plus the ’83 title track hit. 2008

Jack White (The Raconteurs/White Stripes) voices his displeasure that “Another Way To Die,” the theme song he recorded with Alicia Keys for the James Bond flick “Quantum Of Solace,” gets its first exposure in an advertisement. “We are disappointed that you first heard the song in a co-promotion for Coke Zero, rather than in its entirety,” reads a statement from White’s management. 2008

It’s the MTV Video Music Awards from New York! Green Day’s “21 Guns” wins in the Best Rock Video category. “You never know what’s going to happen, and it’s always a memorable experience for us,” says the band’s Billie Joe Armstrong. 2009

Staind release of their self-titled seventh album.  It peaks at #5 0n the Billboard 200.  2011

Jonathan Demme’s documentary “Neil Young Journeys” premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. Demme uses concert footage from earlier in the year interspersed with brief scenes from a Young’s road trip through his native Ontario. 2011

This would be insane if it weren’t for a good cause. Gene Simmons (KISS) chews a piece of gum, showing off some tongue tricks, during an interview on the U.K.’s Soccer AM show.  The gum is later sold on eBay for $245,000. In addition to the gum, the winning bidder takes home the original gum wrapper, along with a transcript from the program. All of the proceeds from the auction go to the Street League which helps sports fans get jobs across the U.K., while fighting homelessness. 2013

Having announced his departure weeks earlier, Chris Walla, a founding member of Death Cab For Cutie, plays his final concert with the band in Victoria, B.C. 2014

REO Speedwagon’s Gary Richrath dies at the age of 65. The guitarist was with the group from ’70 to ’89. 2015

Husker Du’s Grant Hart dies at age 56 after being diagnosed with cancer.   2017

Yes guitarist Steve Howe is honored with the Prog God Award at the Progressive Music Awards in London. 2018

Behemoth frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski announces that his conviction for offending religious feelings has been dismissed by a court in Warsaw. The charges stemmed from an image the Polish musician posted on social media showing a foot stamping on a picture of the Virgin Mary. At the time, Darski was ordered to pay a fine and court costs. He contested the judgement.   2021
