“Some Kind Of Monster” wins the Best Documentary honor at the 20th annual Independent Spirit Awards, held in Santa Monica, CA. The Metallica film follows the recording of the album of the same name. 2005

Singer Mitch Ryder (William S. Levise Jr.) has a birthday. He’s the frontman for Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels (“Devil With A Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly,” “Jenny Take A Ride”). Ryder is actually from Hamtramck, MI. 1945

Canned Heat’s Bob ‘Bear’ Hite enters the world. 1945

“Point Of Entry,” Judas Priest’s seventh full-length effort, arrives.  The gold album was recorded in Spain.  1981

Thanks to heavy MTV play, Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like A Wolf,” peaks at #3 on the U.S. singles chart. 1983

“Supernatural,” featuring “Smooth” with vocals by Rob Thomas (Matchbox Twenty), returns to the top of the Billboard 200 for the next six weeks.  The album had a three-week run at the top in January.  2000

“Seventeen Days,” by 3 Doors Down, is #1 on the Billboard 200.  It’s the band’s third album – following “The Better Life” and “Away From The Sun.”  2005

Maxim magazine apologizes for running a lukewarm review of the Black Crowes’ “Warpaint” album. Seems the magazine’s music critic didn’t listen to the entire disc before assigning a two-and-a-half-star rating (pretty low). Maxim admits that it hadn’t followed editorial policy. The Crowes’ manager, Pete Angelus, calls the publication’s statement ‘self-serving damage control’ and wants Maxim to ‘issue a public apology’ to the band. 2008

Ex-Jimi Hendrix drummer Buddy Miles dies at age 60 at his home in Austin, TX. Miles played on the legendary “Electric Ladyland” album and co-founded, with Hendrix, the short-lived Band Of Gypsys in ’69. 2008

Iggy Pop and Patti Smith perform at the 20th annual Tibet House U.S. Benefit Concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall. The event supports the organization’s efforts to promote and preserve Tibet’s cultural heritage. 2010

Chuck Berry is one of the first recipients of PEN New England’s Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. In an email read during the ceremony, Bob Dylan states that Berry is “the Shakespeare of Rock n’ Roll.” 2012

“For All Kings” by Anthrax is released. The album marks the debut of former Shadows Fall lead guitarist Jon Donais, who replaces Rob Caggiano, following his departure in ’13. 2016

Eugene Abdukhanov, the bassist for Ukrainian Metal band Jinjer, condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and asks for support from Metalheads worldwide, in a video message on YouTube. Russia launched a large-scale military attack on Ukraine, which is on Russia’s southern border, two days earlier. 2022

Poison’s Bret Michaels headlines “Concert with a Purpose” in Clearwater, FL. Event proceeds benefit the local Florida chapter of 50 Legs which is dedicated to securing prosthetics for amputees who cannot afford them on their own. Michaels also personally donates $10,000 to 50 Legs.  2020

Roger Waters’ (Pink Floyd) concert in Frankfurt, Germany is canceled with the city citing Waters’ ongoing “anti-Israel behaviour” calling him “one of the most widely spread anti-Semites in the world.” There is “particular sensitivity” regarding Festhalle, the concert’s venue, since it was where Nazis corralled approximately 3,000 Jews ahead of their deportation to concentration camps in 1938.   2023
