1976 The Band’s Thanksgiving Day farewell concert is at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco.

Filmed by director Martin Scorsese and released two years later as “The Last Waltz,” the concert also features Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Ringo Starr.

1995 Alice In Chains self-titled third studio album is #1 on the Billboard 200.

It’s the band’s last set to feature original lead vocalist Layne Staley (who dies in ’02).  

2003 “Life On Display” from Puddle Of Mudd, hits the streets.

The band’s second studio album goes gold and spawns the track “Away From Me,” which tops the Mainstream Rock chart. 


2021 The documentary, “The Beatles: Get Back,” is available on Disney Plus. 

Directed by Peter Jackson, the film is culled from 55 hours of previously unreleased footage from the “Let It Be” sessions.

1959 Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery has a birthday.  He is the original guitarist and the longest-continuous member of the British band. 

1964 Screaming Trees’ Mark William Lanegan is born in Ellensburg, WA.

1965 Rancid’s singer/guitarist, Tim Armstrong, is born in Albany, CA. 

1967 Groovy man. One of the few times anything even remotely psychedelic ever tops the pop chart, the Strawberry Alarm Clock (some name) has the #1 song in the U.S. with “Incense And Peppermint.”

1968 Cream performs the first of two farewell shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

1969 John Lennon returns his MBE (Member of the British Empire). “I am returning this MBE in protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam, and against “Cold Turkey” slipping down the charts.”

1972 Mark Duane Morton, lead guitarist for Lamb Of God, has a birthday.

1989 Eric Clapton’s “Pretending” tops the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

2007 Quite Riot’s Kevin DuBrow dies at age 52. The singer is found dead at his Las Vegas home. According to the Clark County toxicology report, Dubrow’s death was caused by an accidental cocaine overdose.

2008 Rob Zombie’s song “War Zone,” his first new music in three years, is heard on the soundtrack for the action film “Punisher: War Zone.” “I love writing music for films, rather than just throwing them an unwanted B-side or remix,” says Zombie. “(It’s a) punishing track for a punishing movie.”

2010 At a concert in Auckland U2 honors 29 miners killed in a Pike River, New Zealand, coal mine day earlier. During the song “One Tree Hill,” the names of the dead miners are scrolled across the big screens onstage.

2011 Resistance Pro, a wrestling company founded by longtime fan Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), stages its first event at Club Excalibur in Chicago. “I’ve been involved sort of behind the scenes with pro wrestling for about a decade and made a lot of friends in the business,” says Corgan. “I essentially got involved with some brothers who had a wrestling promotion. We decided to form our own promotion and we’re going to try to bring back the glory days.”

2012 The Rolling Stones play the first of five arena dates celebrating their 50th anniversary. The London O2 concert features appearances by former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. Due to noise ordinances the two-hour concert ends at 11:05 pm before the Stones have a chance to play “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

2012 Elton John dedicates his show in Beijing to Chinese political dissident and artist Ai Weiwei, saying the show is for “the spirit and talent” of Ai.

2013 The Beastie Boys share an open letter with The New York Times regarding toymaker GoldieBlox’s use of the song “Girls” in a viral video ad that generated over eight million views. In a preemptive lawsuit, the toy company claimed what they did constitute fair use. The Beastie Boys filed a countersuit stating that while they were “impressed by the creativity and the message” the song had been “used without our permission.” Later, Goldieblox issues an apology and makes a donation to charity.

2013 “The Great Pretender,” a documentary about the late Queen singer Freddie Mercury, wins the International Emmy Award for Best Arts Program at the 41st International Emmys in New York.

2013 U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Linkin Park are among the artists on “Songs For The Philippines,” an iTunes album to raise money for those affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan. All proceeds go to the Philippine Red Cross.

2014 Drummer Shawn Drover quits Megadeth after a ten-year tenure. His announcement comes a day before guitarist Chris Broderick also bails on Megadeth.

2015 The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court rules against Boston guitarist Tom Scholz in his defamation lawsuit against the Boston Herald and Micki Delp, the former wife of late singer Brad Delp. Scholz sued both parties after the newspaper printed articles, which Scholz claimed, could be construed as blaming him for Delp’s ‘07 suicide.

2021 Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi presents “Scent Of Dark,” a fragrance, designed in collaboration with luxury Italian perfume house Xerjoff and Sergio Momo.   

2021 “Dirty Poetry From the Contagiously Contorted And Quixotically Twisted Mind Of Ivan L. Moody” is available. The Five Finger Death Punch frontman’s “quixotically twisted” prose are accented by Blake Armstrong’s illustrations. 

2023 Green Day’s “The American Dream Is Killing Me” is #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart. The track is from the band’s fourteenth album “Saviors.” 

2024 Gibson Guitars confirms that it has issued a cease and desist order to Trump Guitars over the use of its single-cut electric guitar model, “as the design infringes upon Gibson’s exclusive trademarks, particularly the iconic Les Paul body shape.” The company claims they have the “only guitar officially endorsed by President Donald J. Trump.
