1983 Dio release their debut album “Holy Diver.” 

Having been kicked out of Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio forms his own band.  The album goes gold a year later but takes six years to achieve platinum status (one million sales).

1985 Vocalist, lead guitarist and one of the founding members of Airbourne, Joel O’Keeffe, is born in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia.

1996 Van Halen’s “Humans Being” is #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart.  The song was recorded for the disaster film Twister.

1996 Bradley Nowell, Sublime’s lead singer, is found dead in a San Francisco motel room of a drug overdose. He was 28.

2004 Courtney Love pleads guilty to a misdemeanor count of being under the influence of a controlled substance and agrees to enter a drug rehabilitation program. The plea is the result of an incident the previous October.

2004 What a shorter but strange trip it’s been. Phish, often regarded as a younger version of The Grateful Dead, announce they are breaking up. The group releases an album and rolls through a summer tour before they are gone. Naturally, a few years later, they reform and roll on.

2006 The Kinks leader Ray Davies and Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson are honored at the United Kingdom’s prestigious Ivor Novello Awards, held in London. Davies nabs the Outstanding Contribution to British Music honor, while Anderson receives the International Achievement trophy.

2007 “Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End” opens. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards plays the father of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). “(It was) just something to do,” says Richards, who sees similarities between being a pirate and life in a Rock group. “Both are ways to make a good dishonest living.”

2010 The self-titled Stone Temple Pilots comeback album is available in the U.S. “(Guitarist) Dean (DeLeo) really stepped up,” says frontman Scott Weiland. “His playing is amazing.” The album is the band’s first studio effort since ’01’s “Shangri-La Dee Da.” It features the #1 single (on Rock and Alternative charts) “Between The Lines.”

2012 Against Me! singer/guitarist Tommy Gabel makes her live debut as Laura Jane Grace, performing with the band for the first time since coming out as transgender. The San Diego show is the first stop in a month-long U.S. tour.

2013 Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee retires his roller coaster drum set following a concert at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. During Lee’s drum solos, the rig spun him around upside down while he played. “A bottle of Champagne smashed on the coaster last night as it sets sail for the scrap yard,” tweets Lee.

2018 Black Veil Brides ‘Andy Biersack is robbed while he and his wife are sleeping at their residence. “The thief took years-worth of BVB memorabilia including my STWOF (Set The World On Fire) stage outfits, countless things I have collected and hoped to share with my family one day,” writes Biersack in a post.

2022 A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge dismisses an abuse lawsuit filed against Marilyn Manson by his former assistant, Ashley Walters, on the grounds of the statute of limitations. At issue are incidents that allegedly occurred in ’11 and ’12. 

2025 Goo Goo Dolls are a wedding band. Demi Lovato marries Jordan “Jutes” Lutes in a Santa Barbara, CA. The singer, songwriter, actress bride, a Goo Goo Dolls fan, enlists the band to play “Iris” for the first dance at her wedding.
