Hair Bands evolved directly from the glam rock movement of the 1970s, as visual elements taken from artists like David Johansen and David Bowie and fused with the more heavy metal and theatrical acts such as Alice Cooper and Kiss. Rock had always been a visual medium whether it was Elvis’ gyrating pelvis, the Beatles’ energetic performances, Alice Cooper’s stage antics or KISS with their total audio/visual assault. So this seemed like a natural progression. Nothing in the history of popular culture had greater success merging music and fashion than MTV.
