Devil You Know/Light The Torch

Former Killswitch Engage frontman Howard Jones left the band in '12 to manage his type 2 diabetes which was worsened by a hectic touring lifestyle.

A bit later guitarist Francesco Artusato (Shall Perish) and drummer John Sankey (Devolved/Fear Factory/Divine Heresy) began working on a side project where they composed over a dozen songs.

"It became a departure from what I'm known for," said Artusato. "I wasn't focusing on technical guitar parts but simply on writing what felt best for each individual song."

The next step was finding an available vocalist.

"We were unsure if Howard would be interested," said Sankey. He was.

"It turned from bare-bones musical ideas into something that surpassed any of our expectations" explained Jones. "It went from something we thought was going to be a fun, heavy project into something very real."

"It's a different style of music for me," continued Jones. "It's heavy as anything any of us are known for but I get to do some different things people won't expect. I've been singing almost all my life. Being around good songwriters and musicians in my former bands really helped mold me into who I am now."

Devil You Know recorded their debut with former Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader producing. After the sessions were completed they announced the additions of bassist Ryan Wombacher (Bleeding Through) and guitarist Roy Lev-Ari (Hiss Of Atrocities).

"The Beauty Of Destruction" dropped in April, '14 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The album went to #50 on the Billboard 200 selling nearly 6,000 units in the first week.

Lev-Ari left in '15 after a two year run with Devil You Know. His departure made Artusato the sole guitarist.

Months later, the group issued their sophomore set, "They Bleed Red," containing the single "Stay Of Execution."

When Sankey had to return to Australia to plan the inaugural Legion Music Fest, he was a co-founder and ambassador, former Trivium drummer Nick Augusto filled in for Devil You Know's North American trek. Turned out Sankey wasn't coming back.

Two albums into their career the Devil You Know became Light The Torch. The move was driven by Sankey's '16 departure and his desire to claim part of the copyrighted name.

The group's first album under their new moniker was '18's "Revival." Shortly thereafter, they made their live debut at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn.
