By the time Brand New issued their fourth studio album, "Daisy," band members had come a long way from their Long Island roots and the Rookie Lot. When that late-90s band imploded, Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney and Brian Lane started Brand New adding guitarist Vincent Accardi. The next year, '01, Brand New's debut "Your Favorite Weapon" was released on Triple Crown Records.
In '03, "Deja Entendu" dropped and made some noise (MTV2/Fuse TV) with the singles "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and "Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades." The album even landed on the UK chart.
"Jesse [Lacey] wrote a lot of the lyrics about different things than 'I just broke up with my girlfriend' for the new record ("Deja Entendu")," said Lane, explaining the album's popularity.
The title, "Deja Entendu," is French for "already heard.." According to Lacey, it was all tongue-in-cheek. "No matter who you are or what your band is about, you can't put a record out without people saying it's derivative of something else. So by saying the record's already been heard, it's kind of like saying, 'Yeah, you're right. We're doing something that's already been done before."
With two albums to their credit, Brand New added rhythm guitarist Derrick Sherman and moved to Interscope Records.
"I'm getting depressed with all of the anxiety about the album and they say I write my best stuff when I'm in that state," said Lacey while writing '06's "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Of Me," the band's first effort for Interscope. "Great, I'll spend the next six months all depressed and the rest of band will be excited, so that some good (material) might come out. And then I have to contend with how it's received."
The single "Jesus Christ" charted on the Alternative Songs chart. Though it didn't get far, it was still the group's best showing to date (#30). Brand New's '09 album, "Daisy" was issued on the group's Procrastinate! Music Traitors label.
"I think a lot of the record is about us trying to make decisions about how long the band should go on," noted Lacey. "When I listened back to it, I realized how many songs are about something coming to a close, or knowing when it's time to put something away and move on."
Despite any air of uncertainty, "Daisy" kept the band's fortunes on an upswing as the set cracked the Top 10 on the Billboard album chart.
2001 Your Favorite Weapon
2003 Deja Entendu
2006 The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
"Deja Entendu" is aptly titled. The album does sound a lot like of other Emo-Punk. But with "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades," and other tracks, Brand New prove they are particularly good at it.
Given that the title is "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Of Me" it would be reasonable to expect blast-furnace Punk. Rather, this effort leans more Emo, anchored by melodic mid-tempo tracks, "Sowing Season" and "Jesus Christ."
"Daisy" represents yet another change. "Sink," goes Grunge (sounds great) while "Gasoline" is disjointed - thanks to the percussion - but still driving. "Bed," "Bought A Bride" and "In A Jar" provide the album's core appeal. But neither "Vices," a toss-off, or "Be Gone's" psycho-Delta Blues was a good idea.
