Bad Company

Bad Company

In mid '79, amid rumors Bad Company was splitting, lead singer Paul Rodgers was holed up in the studio recording the group's last hurrah. On "Rock 'n ' Roll Fantasy," the group's final Top 20 single, Paul Rodgers played all the instruments and did the vocals. In other words, as close to a solo effort as you can get without being a solo.

Frustrated with Free's lack of sustained success, largely due to band members drug problems, singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kike team up with former Mott The Hopple guitarist Mick Ralphs and former King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell. No glam, no glitter, these guys were straight-ahead guitar Rockers.

Signed by Led Zeppelin's Swan Songs label Bad Company began tearing it up, briefly rivaling Led Zep. They reeled off a series of classics: ""Can' t Get Enough," "Movin' On," "Good Lovin' Gone Bad," "Feel Like Making Love," "Rock Steady," "Bad Company" and "Burning Sky." Their self-titled debut hit in '74 and for the next three years they released an album a year.

After '79's "Desolation Angels," which contained "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy," the band took three years off. They returned in '82 with "Rough Diamonds." But Paul Rodgers left shortly thereafter. Bad Company carried on with other singers. Not a real good idea. Rodgers appeared next with Jimmy Page in the short-lived, The Firm. From there he went on to do some exceptional Blues work.

Bad Company's self-titled debut is what counts. It contains Bad Company's best, if not best known, songs: "Ready For Love," "Movin' On," "Rock Steady" and the hit "Can't Get Enough." The next two albums, "Straight Shooter" and "Run With The Pack" are good but a notch below the debut.
