Musicians often have musical parents. Alvvays lead vocalist Molly Rankin is the daughter of John Morris Rankin from the Canadian Folk group the Rankin Family.

Also, childhood friends and neighbors can become bandmates. Rankin's next door neighbor was keyboardist Kerri MacLellan.

Rankin met guitarist Alec O'Hanley at a show and they wrote the music for Rankin's self-released "She" EP in '10. Following that adventure Rankin, MacLellen and O'Hanley added bassist Brian Murphy and drummer Phil MacIssac to form the Toronto based Alvvays.

Performances at '14's SXSW plus their song "Adult Diversion" caught Polyvinyl Records attention and they subsequently signed the band.

Alvvays' self-titled '14 debut album was recorded in Calgary with producer John Agnello (Hold Steady, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.).
