5 Seconds Of Summer

You are known by the company you keep. Generally, that admonition is a caution against hanging with the wrong people. But in the music biz raucous is good and safe is bad. For 5 Seconds Of Summer (5SOS) their questionable company was One Direction - the very personification of boy band pop. Both were managed by the same company and toured together.

Despite the name, 5SOS are not from the Northwest U.S., but rather Australia. In late '11, Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood, students at Norwest Christian College, posted videos of themselves performing covers of popular songs. That nifty bit of self-promotion earned tens-of-thousands of hits. Drummer Ashton Irwin was added to complete the line-up.

Their debut single "Out Of My Limit," was released in Australia and New Zealand, with "She Looks So Perfect" being their debut worldwide release. The "Unplugged" EP did well in Australia and other markets, despite no promotion beyond Facebook and Twitter. The "Somewhere New" EP came next.

All that activity landed 5SOS a supporting slot on One Direction's worldwide Take Me Home Tour.

The band announced in '13 that they had signed with Capitol Records. But even before an album was released the music media tagged 5SOS as a boy band. The group countered saying they wrote their own songs, played their own instruments and were not primarily a dance band, so ergo, not a boy band. Okay, but they still had a ton of fanatical female fans.

In April '14, the "She Looks So Perfect" EP debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. The trade magazine called the second single, "Don't Stop," a deceptively charming Pop-Punk anthem."

And in June, the group's self-titled debut studio album arrived. First week sales totaled 258,000 copies to top the Billboard 200 (also #1 in 13 countries). Week two saw sales drop to 54,000 with the album falling to #4. Even so, 5 Seconds Of Summer picked up the New Artist of the Year trophy at the '14 American Music Awards.

Their second studio album, "Sounds Good Feels Good," a '15 release, contained the singles - "She's Kinda Hot," "Hey Everybody!" and "Jet Black Heart." "She's Kinda Hot" did the best peaking at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #15 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40.

Critics felt the set was an improvement over the band's debut but criticized it for a "lack of cohesiveness and cliché themes." No doubt that led to a moment of truth when it came "Youngblood," their third studio album.

"We had to look at each other and say, 'Are we going to stop now, or do this forever," said Hemmings. "Because if we continue, then we have to go farther than we ever have before."

It worked. The album topped the Billboard 200 selling 142,000 total copies in its release week.
